Élégie
Composed in 2010 for Cello and String Orchestra
Elegie for Perf-14
Élégie was written for my daughter Fiona at the request of John Pohran, to be played with the Canterbury High School Senior Strings. It was rehearsed but never performed – I don’t really know why. It has yet to be performed.
It is a short piece, largely diatonic and, I think, not terribly difficult, although extremely transparent. I wrote it in the way I wish I could write all pieces; I conceived of the climactic moment first and then wrote the rest of the piece leading up to it and then away. It was intended to be a deeply beautiful and spiritual piece.
