Light is a three-movement set of pieces for Women’s chorus (SSAA), inspired by the poetry of long-time collaborator Susan McMaster. In her words “In “Autumn Woods”, I wander through the complexities of love dying with the leaves in an Edmonton park, the shifting light that casts shade still whispering spring’s return. In “Daffodils”, I find friendship every year renewed by the marvel of the spring flowers in an Ottawa garden. In “Wings”, I’m caught mid-step in the labyrinth of St Peter’s Abbey, Saskatchewan, during the winter poetry colloquium, stunned by a shower of snow crystals and rising birds.”

Light was written for two choirs, Hypatia’s Voice in Ottawa and Ensemble Laude in Victoria. The premieres took place on April 27, 2019 (Hypatia’s Voice), directed by Laura Hawley and June 8, 2019 (Ensemble Laude), directed by Elizabeth McIsaac. The recording below is from the Ensemble Laude performance.
